Nobelpriset i medicin

This morning, the winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine were announced. This year, the Prize to one German and two Americans for their discoveries on how proteins are transported in cells by vesicles. A system that is crutial for cell function.

It is unusual that the Nobel Prize goes to researcher within the field of fundamental cell biology where the clinical relevance is not evident. However, this transport system is involved in the etiology of diabetes as well as neurological and autoimmune disorders. Mapping this system is importanr in order to understand how these disorders arise as well how they can be prevented or treated.
