Som ni kanske vet är jag intresserad av evolution och framförallt sexuell selektion (som ni kan läsa mer om här och här). Sexuell selektion delas in i två kategorier: intersexuell sexuell selektion (främjar egenskaper som attrahera det motsatta könet) samt intrasexuell selektion (främjar egenskaper som avskräcker sexuella rivaler).
När jag skrev om konferensen i Marseille nämnde jag en studie som går emot “Sexy son”- hypotesen. Denna hypotes handlar om att egenskaper som ger reproduktiva fördelar hos söner premieras trots att de är förknippade med lägre fitness hos döttrar. Studien visade dock att män med maskulinare ansiktsdrag inte anses vara mer attraktiva än genomsnittet.
Höga testosteronnivåer ger maskulina ansiktsdrag och efter presentationen pratade jag lite med en av forskarna bakom studien. Jag frågade vad han trodde att det fanns för anledning till att vissa män har högre testosteronnivåer om det nu inte ger högre fitness eller attraktionsförmåga. Han trodde att det handlade om fördelar när det gäller intrasexuell konkurrens.
På något sätt tycker jag att det är tragiskt om män har så många egenskaper som förmodligen går ut på att impa på andra snubbar. Men sekundärt leder detta till att även vissa kvinnor blir imponerade (eftersom social status är attraktivt). Med andra ord har snoppmätartävlingar evolutionärt haft en stor betydelse för att skapa dagens män.
The function of dick measuring contests
As you may know, I’m interested in evolution and especially sexual selection. Sexual selection is divided into two categories: inter-sexual sexual selection (promotes qualities that attract the opposite sex) and intrasexuell selection (promotes qualities that gives advantages when competing with sexual rivals).
When I wrote about the conference in Marseille, I mentioned a study that goes against the Sexy son hypothesis. This hypothesis suggests that features that provide reproductive advantages for sons are selected even though they are associated with lower fitness in daughters. However, the study showed that men with more masculine facial features are not considered more attractive than the average.
High testosterone levels give masculine facial features and after the presentation, I talked a bit with one of the researchers behind the study. I asked what he thought was the reason that some men have higher testosterone levels if it does not give higher fitness or attractiveness. He thought it was about advantages for intrasexuell competition.
In some sense I think it is tragic if men have so many qualities that supposedly aims to impress other dudes. But secondarily, this will in the extension lead to impressing some women (because social status is attractive). In other words, dick measuring contests have evolutionarily played an important role in creating today’s men.
