I en ny studie som publicerats i tidskriften Evolution and Human Behavior fick manliga försöksdeltagare tro att man tävlade om en date med en attraktiv kvinna. Vissa av männen informerades om att deras tävlingsmotståndare var en fysiskt svag man och de övriga fick tro att de tävlade mot en stark man. Männen fick sedan träffa kvinnan och uppmanades att charma henne genom att skämta och berätta historier.
Resultaten visade att männen som trodde att deras motståndare var en stark man var mindre benägna att skoja och berätta historier och när de väl gjorde det var skämten och historierna mindre raffinerade i jämförelse med män som trodde att de hade en svag motståndare.
Jag har tidigare skrivit att genom sexuell selektion främjas karaktärsdrag som håller sexuella rivaler borta. Vissa mansideal som exempelvis extremt mycket muskelmassa kan vara resultat av intrasexuell konkurrens snarare än vad kvinnor anser är mest attraktiv. Denna studie visar att dominanta män (i detta fall fysiskt starka) till och med har en negativ påverkan på den egna attraktionsförmågan hos sexuella rivaler.
Tror ni att det funkar på samma sätt för tjejer? Om det fullt av tjejer med Gucci-väskor på damtoaletten ökar risken att man får läppstift på tänderna när man sminkar sig? Oklart i nuläget men ta gärna en extra titt i spegeln, just in case 😉
Strong men hampers attractiveness of rivals
In a new study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior male trial participants were led to believe that they competed for a date with an attractive woman. Some of the men were informed that their opponent was a physically weak man and the other was thinking that they were competing against a strong man. The men then got to meet the woman and were asked to charm her by joking and telling stories.
The results showed that men who thought their opponent was a strong man were less inclined to joke and tell stories and once they did the jokes and stories were less refined in comparison to men who thought they had a weak opponent.
I have previously written that sexual selection promotes traits that keep sexual rivals away. Some male ideals such as extremely large muscle mass may be the result of intrasexuell competition rather than what women find most attractive. This study shows that dominant males (in this case physically strong) even have an impact on the attractiveness of sexual rivals.
Do you think it works the same way for girls? If it the restroom is full of girls with Gucci handbags the risk that you get lipstick on your teeth increases? Not clear at this point but why not have a closer look in the mirror, just in case ;-)?
