I natt delades Ig Nobelpriset ut med pompa och ståt. Jag har tidigare skrivit om hur detta pris är en sorts parodi på Nobelpriset som uppmärksammar forskning av det lite mer udda slaget. I Svensk media har man framförallt uppmärksammat att Lukasjenko fick fredspriset och att tre svenskar fick ta emot priset i biologi och astronomi i år för deras studie som visade att dyngbaggar som gått vilse kan hitta hem genom att titta på Vintergatan.
Min favorit i år var vinnaren i kategorien psykologi. Denna studie publicerades med den fantastiska titeln “Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder“. I studien visade man att personer som fick bedöma sitt utseende genom att spegla sig tyckte att de blev mer attraktiva ju mer de drack. I en senare del av studien fick försökspersonerna hålla ett kort tal efter att vissa hade druckit alkohol och andra var nyktra. Talet filmades och sedan skattade försökspersonerna den egna prestationen med anseende på hur attraktiv, smart, rolig och originell man var. Talen bedömdes även av 22 oberoende personer. Resultaten visade att personer som trodde att de druckit alkohol gav sig själva mer positiva utvärderingar men resultaten från de oberoende bedömarna visade att prestationen egentligen inte var bättre hos de som var berusade.
Tidigare studier har visat att man anser att andra människor är mer attraktiva när man är berusad men denna studie är den första att visa att man även tycker att man själv är bättre och snyggare när man är berusad. Jag håller tummarna för att man på grund av den positiva respons man fått på denna studie kommer att göra ett liknande försök men nu titta på om man verkligen blir bättre på att dansa när man har druckit alkohol eller om man bara tror att man dansar bättre ;-).
Last night, the Ig Nobel Prize award ceremony took placed. I have previously written about how this price is a parody of the Nobel Prize and recognizes research of the more unusual kind. The Swedish media have primarily focused on how Lukasjenko received the Peace Prize and that three Swedes received the award in biology and astronomy this year for their study showing that dung beetles that are lost may find their way home by looking at the Milky Way.
My favorite this year, however, was the winner in the category Psychology. This winning study was published with the amazing title “Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.” The study showed that people who rated their appearance by reflecting themselves in mirrors thought that they became more attractive the more they drank. In the second part of the study, subjects gave a short speech after some had been drinking alcohol and some were sober. The speech was filmed and then subjects rated their own performance with the reputation of how attractive, smart, funny and original it was. The performances were also judged by 22 independent individuals. The results showed that people who thought that they had consumed alcohol gave themselves more positive evaluations, but the results from the independent evaluators showed that performance was not really better in those who were drunk.
Previous studies have shown that you consider other people to be more attractive when you’re drunk but this study is the first to show that you also think that you yourself are better and more attractive when you’re drunk. I keep my fingers crossed that the positive feedback they received on this study will make them design a similar study but now look at whether you really are better at dancing when you have consumed alcohol, or if you just think you dance better 😉
